A highly experienced group of people with a broad range of skills governs the CRCV. The Board is made up of academics, winemakers, growers, government representatives and managers.

MR TONY MARTIN

Chairman

Tony has been a viticulturist at Merbein in north west Victoria for the past 20 years. His property is planted to 70 acres of vines producing both dried fruit and wine grapes. He has been a Board member of the Australian Dried Fruits Association Inc. (ADFA) since 1989 and held the position of Deputy Chairman of the Board in 1998. He is involved in many local water issues and is Chairman of the ADFA Water & Environment Committee and Drying for Profit Program.

DR JIM HARDIE

CRCV Chief Executive Officer

Jim became the Director of the CRCV in 1994 and was appointed CEO of the new Centre. He has 25 years' experience in the management of research and development in the viticultural industry, coupled with original research in a variety of viticultural topics, including nine years in the public sector with the Victorian Department of Agriculture and 10 years with one of Australia's leading wine companies. Jim was awarded his Doctorate for studies on the development of the grape in relation to its biological function and secondary metabolism. He has published more than 30 papers in scientific and technical journals.

MR JOHN DAL BROI

John is a winegrape grower from the Riverina, New South Wales. His technical education was in rural technology and farm mechanics. In 1960 he bought his own property, Bil Bul in the NSW, Riverina, and over a ten year period completely replanted it to wine grapes, growing premium varieties and some unusual varieties. He has always had a keen interest in applying viticultural research and technology.

John has contributed on a personal and professional level to the industry, serving the industry for 20 years in many honorary capacities as Deputy Chair, then Chairman of the Riverina's Wine Grape Marketing Board. He is a Past president of the Wine Grape Growers' Council of Australia and is a member of the Wine Grape Industry Advisory Committee. John is an appointee of the Winegrape Growers' Council of Australia.

MR PHILIP LAFFER

Philip is Chief Winemaker and Director of Viticulture and Oenology for the Orlando Wyndham Group. He was educated in agriculture and oenology at Roseworthy Agricultural College (University of Adelaide, Roseworthy Campus), Philip has been employed in the wine industry since 1963. He began with Lindemans Wines Pty Ltd as winemaker, resigning from the company in 1990 having been Executive Director - Operations and Chief Winemaker including three years as Marketing Director and Deputy Managing Director. He joined Orlando Wines in 1990 as Operations Director, became Company Winemaker in 1992 and took up his current role in 1995. He is a Past President of the South Australian Wine and Brandy Industry Association and a past judge at Australian national wine shows. He is a member of a number of industry organisations including the Australian Wine Export Council. Philip is an appointee of the Winemakers' Federation of Australia.

PROFESSOR ANNA KOLTUNOW

Professor Anna Koltunow is Assistant Chief of CSIRO Plant Industry and is based at the Waite Campus. She is an internationally recognised expert in developmental biology and researches fruit and seed formation in plants. She is president of the International Association of Plant Sexual Reproduction Research, Affiliate Professor in the School of Agriculture and Wine at the University of Adelaide and was on the board of the International Society for Plant Molecular Biology (1997-2001). In addition to being a committed scientific researcher, Anna is also heavily involved in training students in the field of plant development.

She graduated with Honours at Flinders University and completed her PhD at the University of Adelaide. A postdoctoral position at the CSIRO Division of Horticulture led to research into the molecular characteristics of grapevine viroids. Other previous research projects have focused on asexual seed formation in plants and seed development. Her ongoing research focus includes fruit and seed development in model plants, Arabidopsis and Hieracium and is being applied to a range of crops. She coordinates the Key Genes for Horticultural Markets Gene Discovery Project, part of the AusHort initiative funded by Horticulture Australia Ltd and The Flavour Theme of the Agrifood Top 5 Flagship.

DR JIM FORTUNE

Jim is the Executive Director, Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation and is a highly experienced agricultural science researcher and research manager. Originally from Western Australia he gained a doctorate in Plant Science from Massey University, New Zealand. Before starting with the GWRDC in late 2002 Jim held senior positions at the Grains Research and Development Corporation and the CRC for Weed Management Systems.

MR DOUG McWILLIAM

Doug is the Production Director of McWilliam's Wines Pty Ltd and has had 27 years production and research and development experience in the Australian wine industry. He is a previous Chairman of Council of The Australian Wine Research Institute and has been a member of the Winemakers' Federation of Australia's Technical Committee. Doug's tertiary qualifications include a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science (Food Science). Doug is an appointee of the Winemakers' Federation of Australia.

PROFESSOR GEOFF SCOLLARY

Geoff is the Director, National Wine and Grape Industry Centre and Head, School of Wine and Food Sciences at Charles Sturt University. He has research interests in wine chemistry, toxicology and new methods for wine analysis. He has published 62 refereed publications and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, Associate Member of the Australian Society for Viticulture and Oenology and Professional Member of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture. Geoff is the appointee of the National Wine and Grape Industry Centre.

DR ROB LEWIS

Dr Rob Lewis is the Executive Director of the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), the Government's principal primary industries, aquatic sciences, biotechnology and sustainablity/ biodiversity and related research agency. Previous positions held include Director of Fisheries South Australia and a number of research and research management positions in fisheries and aquatic sciences.

Rob has thirty years experience in research, research management, and public sector management, in South Australia, nationally and internationally, embracing the areas of fisheries, aquaculture, agriculture, biotechnology and biodiversity and natural resource maintenance and management, technology transfer, intellectual property management and commercialisation of research outcomes and science policy. He holds a B.Sc (Hon) from Adelaide University and in December 2003 was awarded a D.Sc (honoris causa) from Flinders University for his contribution to marine science and industries. He is also a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and Chair of the SA Division.

JIM CADDY

Jim has been a private grapegrower in the Riverland for more than 20 years. He is currently the Chairman of the CCW Cooperative Ltd, representing about 750 growers in the Riverland region. He is a member of the Phylloxera and Grape Industry Board of SA, is Deputy Chairman of the Riverland Winegrape Growers Association Inc, is a director for Berren Asset Management (international wine investment fund) and has been a member of the Australian Dried Fruits Association.
