Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO)
CSIRO is one of the world's largest and most diverse scientific research institutions with its work touching just about every aspect of Australian life.
CSIRO's purpose is to generate outcomes which:
- Benefit Australia's industry and economy
- Are of environmental benefit to Australia
- Are of social benefit to Australians
- Support Australian national and international objectives through excellence in science and technology and in the provision of advice and services.
CSIRO Plant Industry
CSIRO Plant Industry applies strategic research in the plant sciences to promote profitable and sustainable agri-food, fibre and horticultural industries, develop novel plant products and improve natural resource management.
Using molecular and conventional approaches, research targets genetic transformation technology for selected horticultural crops, in particular grapevine and citrus. Of most interest are production characteristics such as disease control and fruit set and marketing factors such as shelf life, seedlessness and quality assurance.
Other research focuses on the physiological processes involved in plant responses to water availability.
CSIRO Land and Water
CSIRO Land and Water specialises in research essential to the understanding and sustainable management of land and water resources.
Its major research areas include: sustainable agriculture, sustainable catchment management and remediation of contaminated environments.
