Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation
The GWRDC was established in July 1991 to achieve greater independence, flexibility, responsiveness and accountability to the grape and wine making industries.
Its mission is to realise for Australia the excellent returns available from the strategic investment in wine industry research and development (R&D).
R&D provides the essential new knowledge and know-how to enable the industry to solve problems and grasp opportunities.
The results from R&D have wider impact when implemented, benefiting the broader community through enhanced environmental sustainability, reduced chemical inputs, lower product costs and through the improved productivity of people and processes.
R&D is critical to the growth and development of the industry. Due to the substantial infrastructure required to undertake R&D, it cannot usually be resourced within individual enterprises, therefore the industry is levied to fund R&D on tonnage grown and delivered to wineries (the Grape Research Levy) and on the tonnage converted to wine (the Wine Research Levy).
The GWRDC is the body responsible for: managing industry levy funds and government matching funds; coordinating the wine industry's R&D activity; ensuring that national priorities are met; and that returns on investment in R&D are maximised.
The GWRDC operates as a coordinator, interpreter, broker and commissioner of R&D to meet industry and community outcomes.
