vinelogic virtual vineyard

What is VineLOGIC Virtual Vineyard?

vinelogic1 (13K)VineLOGIC Virtual Vineyard is a simulation model of grapevine growth and development.

What are its uses?

VineLOGIC Virtual Vineyard can be used for education and training and for comparison of vineyard management options through 'what if' scenarios which can be run for a wide range of vineyard set-ups.

Can I get a copy?

VineLOGIC Virtual Vineyard is now available from The Australian Wine Research Institute. The package is an extension of VineLOGIC Version 1 which was developed by the CRC for Viticulture through CSIRO and with input from teaching staff at the University of Adelaide, Charles Sturt University and La Trobe University.

How does it work?

Users of the education package are guided through a 10-step, 'click-on' process to set-up particular vineyard scenarios. The computer then runs the simulation for that scenario and provides a summary of the outputs. The user can then change any of the 10-step inputs and re-run the model to compare the new outputs with the previous outputs.

What are the steps?

vinelogic2 (11K)The user is asked to select one of the offered choices within each of the following:

  1. Weather (region, climate)
  2. Soil type salinity
  3. Pruning system
  4. Trellis type
  5. Variety
  6. Rootstock
  7. Irrigation water
  8. Irrigation schedule
  9. Water table depth
  10. Soil salinity

The user then presses 'simulate' and the computer gives information on the potential performance of a vineyard based on the user's choices. The information appears as on-screen outputs and can be printed if desired.

On-screen outputs are:

  • Time of end of dormancy
  • Time of budburst
  • Time of veraison
  • Time of ripening
  • Potential yield
  • Periods of stress
  • Severity of stress
  • Weather summary

Outputs can be seen either as text or as graphs using a viewer that is part of VineLOGIC Virtual Vineyard. This enables users to compare and analyse results from a wide variety of scenarios.

Testimonial

According to the University of Adelaide's Lecturer in Viticulture, Bob Barrett, VineLOGIC Virtual Vineyard is an extremely useful tool for expanding the skills of students and encouraging them to think about managing vineyards in a holistic manner. »»» more
